How did you meet? We met through a mutual friend while Jamie was visiting Washington DC from Massachusetts.
Who proposed?
Jamie proposed to Michael while snowshoeing in Massachusetts over Valentine’s weekend. Instead of an engagement ring, Jamie gave Michael a silver compass with the words “May we always find our way together” inscribed on the back. We used a compass theme on wedding invitations.
How long have you been together?
7 years
When was your celebration?
September 17, 2005
What is the best/worst piece of advice you have received from friends and/or family?
Jamie’s mom told us to take a few minutes immediately after the ceremony to bask in the fact that we were now united and to take time to ourselves before the reception, where we would be talking to guests, in the middle of a crowd, etc. We walked along a trail and looked into each other’s eyes for a while, reflecting on the commitment we had made to each other.
What is one thing that you would tell people who are planning their wedding?
If you are planning on a budget (and who isn’t?), pick one or two things that you won’t sacrifice, be it the location, the cake or a band. We chose a location that was very personal for us.
Anything else you would like to share with us?
Being married in front of ninety of our friends and family was an important statement for our relationship. It validated the relationship for some in the family (e.g. grandparents) and it was a wonderful time to celebrate with family and friends. For some of our family, it was difficult to decide whether they would attend or not, but those that did are now very supportive of our relationship and understand the importance of same sex couples having a wedding ceremony.
Would you recommend any of the vendors/venues that you have used? If so, who?
We were married at Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival where Jamie once worked and where we spent a lot of time while we were dating. It was a special place for us but they also rent out spaces for weddings. Apart from being beautiful, and historic, the staff was very comfortable and accommodating with same sex couples.

Each week, Queerly Wed will feature a different couple. Are you interested in sharing your story with us? Email us for more information!
