Many people know Jane Wiedlin as the pixie-haired guitarist with the angelic voice from The Go-Go’s, but these days she can also be known by another moniker. Queerly Wed caught up with her this summer to find out about her new and exciting projects.
QW: We hear you have a pseudonym. Tell us about it.
JW: I was very excited when my paperwork arrived in the mail showing that I was a legal ordained minister. I’ve always adored coming up with names. One of the fun things to do before a tour is to each come up with a new silly pseudonym for hotels. Anyway, to celebrate my ministry I have become Reverend Sister Go-Go! You can call me that, or you can call me Jane, or you can call me Miss Wiedlin if you’re nasty!
QW: Why did you decide to become an Officiant?
JW: The idea of having such an important role in such a wonderful and meaningful moment in life, the joining of two people in love, has appealed to me for a long long time. I have always enjoyed MCing at different kinds of events; I have no fear of public speaking and I love entertaining people, and this seemed like a natural extension of that. Plus, I’m a romantic at heart!
I heard that it was fairly easy to become a minister, but then I ALSO heard that those who did so were often not authorized to perform ceremonies. I was interested for nearly a decade, but when I found out that I could become a minister AND definitely be able to officiate weddings and commitment ceremonies, I signed up right away. I have a lot of friends in the GLBT community and I was excited about the new equal rights sentiment in the air.
QW: What were your thoughts after the California Supreme Court upheld Prop 8?
JW: I was shocked and appalled. Especially horrified that it happened in my beloved California, where I’ve lived most of my life. I was really mad when I heard the Mormon Church spent a lot of money trying to keep people in love from marrying. All these people who claim to be religious and then act in ways totally contrary to the teachings they supposedly follow. Oh, and all the business about using the Bible to justify bigotry really got to me! Excuse me while I go gather my pile of stones to throw!!! This world seems topsy turvy a lot of the time!
QW: What kind of couple do you think you are the perfect Officiant for?
My style is very playful, but thoughtful and sweet as well. I am spiritual but not religious. If a couple seeks a light-hearted but smart non-religious ceremony or vows, I think they’d be very happy working with me! Not to mention of course, if you love The Go-Go’s, or just rock & roll period!
QW: Do you have different levels of services that you provide to couples?
JW: Yes, I can just perform the (non-religious) service or the vows, or I can also stay and come to the reception. I can DJ, and even perform w the couple’s band if they want it.
QW: You also have yet another project up your sleeve! Tell us about Lady Robotika. What is the premise, and when does it come out?
JW: My creative partner, Bill Morrison and I met 2 years ago at a comic book convention. He has been part of the Simpsons / Futurama cartoon family for nearly twenty years and is a mega-talented guy who I’m thrilled to be working with. Bill and I decided to create a new comic book character. Our story, Lady Robotika is about me. After doing a gig, I get abducted by aliens and experimented on. After being injected with nanobots, I become a part-robot part-human being. I battle the evil aliens and end up becoming a superhero who fights against injustice all over the galaxy. It is sexy and cheeky and the artwork is gorgeous!!! Long story short: It’s Sex and Droids and Rock & Roll!
QW: Finally, of course we need to ask: Are the Go-Go’s playing any more dates this year?
JW: I like to say we are on “permanent vacation”! We work a few days each year together, and then we all go off and lead our lives! I adore playing live and touring, and would prefer to be working with the band much more often, but I’m only one of five! Believe me, I still keep plenty busy! I am producing and writing for myself and others, I’m fixing up my house in Madison, WI, and have got a hundred things going all the time. You know what they say about idle hands!
